The Color Green Crafts and Activities

I started doing learning colors themed crafts/activities with my son a couple of weeks ago. I chose to start with the color green since he knows all the basic colors but for some reason thinks green is yellow and vice versa.

He wore his green camouflage jogging suit all day while we did green crafts and activities. We went on a scavenger hunt to collect various green colored items from around the house: 2 green circles and 2 green hands from our art projects we were making, green stuffed bear, small green pillow, green Kleenex box, a green Dr Seuss book, big green pillow, and a green step (for exercising). My son seems to always be jumping around pretending to be a frog, so I lined up all the green colored items in a row with spaces in between so he could hop over each as if he were a frog. Think he was tired after all that jumping? Uh-uh! He has an endless amount of energy!

We made 2 green-themed art projects simultaneously: a handprint frog and a paper plate turtle.

I placed newspaper down to protect our work surface area and on top of that, I placed 1 piece of paper and 1 paper plate. I dabbed blobs of green paint in different areas which he then smeared all over both. He had so much paint left on his hands when he was finished that I was able to make 2 perfect green handprints on another sheet of paper. These handprints could then be used for the frog's feet, however, I did it a different way which you can see here. I haven't decided yet what I will be making with the extra green handprints.......

For more detailed instruction for the handprint frog craft, please click here to be taken to my handprint and footprint art blog.

To make the paper plate turtle, I cut green construction paper into small squares. My little artist glued them to the turtle's shell (paper plate). I cut and glued the legs, head, and tail. This was actually the 1st time he acknowledge what a turtle was or tortuga in Spanish.... I'm guessing he never paid much attention to them before since they don't make funny sounds or have a fun motion to go with them?!

I would love to say that for our green-themed day, he ate all the wonderful green veggies like broccoli, green beans, peas, zucchini. Those go straight to the floor while he picks out all the stuff he likes to eat instead! He loved green veggies as a baby- I am hoping that it is just a phase.... one can hope, right?! Instead he made a collage with clip art of green vegetables and fruit. I would love to tell you where I got the images from, however, I had the link saved on our computer that crashed.

He does love to eat green fruit on the other hand! For a snack, he had a pear (the day before, he ate green grapes). For lunch, he got to eat on his green plate (it also has frogs on it!) and the only green item on his plate was avocado. He LOVES avocado! I have gotten many funny looks from family and friends, but it's actually a perfect 1st baby food!

Click to see the following words in American Sign Language:

green (my little guy still struggles with this one)
frog
turtle
vegetable
pear
grapes (this is one of his all time faves to sign!)

I also incorporated a few Spanish words into our theme:

green= verde
frog= rana
turtle= tortuga
grapes= uvas
vegetables= verduras
fruit= fruta
pear= pera
