Like a lot of kids, my son loves the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar
by Eric Carle. I was so happy when I found a printable over at 1+1+1=1. We used the 1st printable 2 different ways.
1) My son likes to spread all the food out in a pyramid shape in the same order as the book. Then, he takes the caterpillar printable and tells the story while making the caterpillar eat each row of food.
He places the caterpillar behind the cocoon printable......
....and it turns into a butterfly!
2) I thought it would be fun to make a Paper Bag Caterpillar to store all the pieces in and to tell the story with.
My little guy painted a red head and green body. I painted one eye on each side of the bag and a nose on the bottom of the bag. I also gave it pipe cleaner antennas (bend the pipe cleaner on the inside to keep it in place).
He reads the book and stuffs the matching foods into the caterpillar as he reads along.
I also printed the Caterpillar and Butterfly Size Sorting activity. There are actually 5 butterflies, but 2 must have flown away when I took the picture ;)

Nice idea! Lately, I did a little hungry caterpillar thing with my daughter and friend (2 and 3 years old). Have a look if you're interested!
