Homemade Black Cat Tutu Costume + Halloween Cat Books & Crafts

Last Halloween I couldn't find a baby/toddler black cat costume that I thought was cute enough, so I decided to make one for my little girl instead. This was my 1st attempt ever at making a costume {and I definitely am not a sewing expert...lol!}, but I think it turned out cute.

DIY Black Cat Tutu Costume for girls
10 months old

Here's how I made the Black Cat Tutu Costume :

  • To make the shirt part {if you don't already have one that is store bought}: I took a 12 month shirt of my daughter's and placed it on top of a black shirt that no longer fit me. Leaving a quarter inch border around her shirt, I cut around it {excluding the arms}. After I placed the cut pieces with the right-sides together, I sewed around the 2 sides and the top leaving openings for the arms and head. The sleeves were made using the sleeves from my old shirt. Again, I placed her shirt sleeve on top of my shirt sleeve and sized it accordingly. Then I sewed them in place.
  • Because I do not really know what I am doing with a sewing machine, I for sure wasn't going to try to attempt to make the rough edges of the head opening look pretty. Instead, I bought furry black ribbon to hide the rough edges there as well as on the ends of the sleeves. I love the way it makes her look that much more cuddly and oh-so-cute!!!
  • To make the tutu part: Cut 4-6 layers of tulle to the length you prefer and add an extra half inch. I prefer to use the sparkle tulle- it's so much prettier than the regular kind. Sew your layers together with a basting stitch and the pull the string until it matches the length of the shirt wrapping it all the way around. Sew it to the bottom of the shirt - I did this by turning the shirt inside-out first.
  • If you want to add ribbon: I cut pink & black zebra ribbon so that it was the same length as the tulle. Optional: Make a decorative cut at the ends of the ribbons- one side only. Use a lighter to seal all the ends of the ribbon to prevent fraying. Attach the ribbon to the the shirt - I just hand-sewed them in place.
  • Finishing the seam: I sewed black ribbon where the shirt and the tutu part met {on the right-side verses inside-out}. Where the edges of the black ribbon met, I made a bow and sewed it in place to hide the edges.
  • What I bought: The black cat ears & black face paint pen are from the Halloween store. I also bought cute pants/leggings that she could wear again with other outfits - the were slightly scrunched up on one side of each leg embellished with a button {I just love little girl clothes & will be so sad when she doesn't let me dress her anymore...lol!}.
